Food Fear
So I have realized that I have an interesting fear of food, not like shake in my boots, but more of a concern of trying new foods. To start off I have never had a gyro before and swore that this semester I was going to stop anywhere and get one. Why do I have this fear? I am not sure, it could be because the name of it starts with g but has an "ee" sound instead. I have used the excuse that I do not have access to any where that sells gyros but in all actuality I pass by several different places that sell them on a daily basis. I have been told that they are delicious and that they are just steak in a pita bread (both of which I really enjoy). I am starting to believe that it is the name that seems unappealing to me. I am used to things that look the way that they sound, and also sound the way that they look. Another food that I am hesitant to try is Thia food, I realize that this is not a single item that I am fearful of it is a countries food but still I am skeptical of giving it a try. Once I have heard anything negative about a single food or nations food I am skeptical of trying it out. I am sure that there is some psychological disorder from which this stems but I was just wondering if anyone else had a food phobia's.

You are missing out, gyros are delicious! It sounds like you almost have an aversion to food colonialism. This is a shame especially when you consider if you had never tried new things you would have quite a limited diet right now. As far as food phobias go, I am now extremely afraid of couscous, a small pasta popular with vegans and other non-mainstream food consumers, but this is more due to my extremely poor attempt at cooking which led to a semi-conscious concoction that reminded me of the blob.
ReplyDeleteHa! My Grandpa has similar food fears. Except his reluctance is with yogurt and sour cream. He refuses to try yogurt because it starts with a "y" and refuses to eat sour cream, because of the word sour( think lemons) -unless someone refers to it as crème fraiche- which is defined as a type of thick cream made from heavy cream with the addition of things like yogurt.
ReplyDeleteFor two years I couldn't eat burritos or any food that smelled similar to them. I had them for lunch one day at school and that night I got really sick-like had to go to the hospital sick! Well, I told everyone over and over and even had it embedded in my mind that the burrito was the cause of my sickness. It was just a bad virus and I was better the next day with medications, but burritos and all Mexican food was just not an option for me for so long.
